Abstrakt
Od początków istnienia Rzymu, co potwierdzają wszystkie znane wersje legendy o Romulusie i Remusie, niemal każdy ważny przejaw działalności publicznej poprzedzano obserwacjami, które miały ukazać stosunek bogów, zwłaszcza Jowisza, do ludzkich poczynań. Obserwacje te prowadzone były niezależnie przez uprawnionych do tego członków magistratury oraz przez kapłanów – augurów. Jako że chociażby do zwołania zgromadzenia ludowego, uchwalenia na nim ustawy czy wyboru urzędników, należało uzyskać pomyślne znaki, niejednokrotnie pojawiała się pokusa, aby ich pojawienie się ogłosić, mimo ich braku. Ale też przeciwnie: zataić lub zignorować znaki niepomyślne.
